Carleton Macy
Artistic Director / Conductor
Dr. Carleton Macy is a professor of Music at
Macalester College since 1978. He teaches music theory,
compositions and music education, and also directs the Jazz
band, the Collegium Musicum, and the New Music Ensemble. Dr.
Macy has an active interest in non-Western music and
currently conducts and performs with the Minnesota Chinese
Music Ensemble. He has studied with William Bergsma, Robert
Suderberg, and Donald Michalsky. His compositions have been
performed at national festival and locally in the Twin
Cities area by ensembles such as the St. Paul Chamber
Orchestra and the Dale Warland Singers. Three woodwind
quintets have received special recognition at national
symposia for new woodwind quintet music, and other
compositions of his have won prizes as well. His
compositions have been recorded on the Minnesota Composers
Forum Innova series and on Access Records.

Zhang Ying
Composer
/ Conductor
Zhang
Ying plays traditional Chinese folk music on eleven different
traditional woodwind instruments.
He is equally accomplished as a
composer, having premiered more than
twenty compositions with the
Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble
since his arrival in the United
States in 1993. In the
People's Republic of China, his 200+ compositions have won over 40
awards. He has studied with some
of China's greatest musicians,
notably Feng Zi-Cun on flute, Shen
Wu-Jun for conducting and Luo
Zhong-Rong for composition.
Zhang
Ying has toured the United States,
China, South East Asia, Russia and
Europe, and has been the recipient of
several awards, including Bush
Artist Fellowship, McKnight
Composer's Fellowship, Minnesota
State Arts Board Artist Fellowship
etc.
His

Charlotte King
Founder / President
Ms. Charlotte King is the founder and current president of the Minnesota Chinese Music Ensemble. She has been an active officer member and one of the principal zheng players since the ensemble was founded in 1987and she coordinates all ensemble performances. Ms. King received the 1990 Governor's Commendation Award for community service in the arts.

Pei Ju
Liu-Picard
Treasurer / Principal Musician
Ms. Pei Ju Liu-Picard has been an active member of the Ensemble since 1990. She helps coordinate ensemble fund raising activities and is a principle percussionist for the Ensemble. Ms. Liu-Picard also plays several other stringed and plucked instruments and performs with the Ensemble frequently. |

Stephanie Vinger
Vice President / Principal Musician
Ms. Stephanie Vinger has been an active member
with the Ensemble since 1992. She is the principal Yang Ching player
and has done various recording work for composer Zhang Ying. She performs with the Ensemble frequently, and has had several solo appearances at the Minnesota Institute of Arts and the Minnesota History Center. Ms. Vinger is also
an accomplished contemporary pianist and performs regularly at various private functions in the Twin Cites.
Ms. Vinger gives private piano lessons, and is the founder of
Rainforest
